With up to 32" of new snow up north yesterday, you NEED to get your equipment up and running for the season. The snow is perfect in the mountains, so why ruin it with a bad tune up. Bring your skis in right now and drop them off. In three days we will sharpen them, fill the scratches on the bases, grind them flat and put a new pattern on them so they glide over all that fresh snow, wax them and basically make them like new. Why take the time to drive two hours and spend upwards of $80 to ski on skis that aren't tuned?

Ski Haus Annual Veterans Day Sale 11/11 - 11/14

What does Veterans Day and skiing have in common? Veterans Day is the unspoken kickoff to ski season here in New England. A few mountains have started to open with a few trails, letting us ski junkies get out for a day and make a few turns to feed our addiction.

Well, for all of us here at the shop, it is the start of our favorite time of year. After long hours transitioning into winter mode, and all of us putting in long hours to set up the Burlington shop, it is finally time to hangout on the sales floor and talk product with you, the customer.

We are forever grateful for our troops, for defending our country, in wars both past and present. We are also grateful for deep snow and long winters of epic ski trips for you and your family.

We will be open 10AM-9PM Thursday and Friday, 10AM-6PM on Saturday, and 12PM-5PM on Sunday.

Common Questions Answered: How Tall should my skis be?

Ahh yes, the age old question most frequently asked in ski shops around the globe:

"How tall should skis be? Where should they come up to?"

There are many things that decide what size ski you should get. As much as the consumer would like to see an equation that answers this question precisely, there is no truely right answer.

With Junior skis, we have a saying, "A ski does not know how tall you are, just how heavy you are by standing on it." We use this expression a lot fitting your kids. The weight of your child is necessary to figure out what ski is going to flex appropriately for them. In extreme circumstances, if a ski is visibly too tall or short, we will size down/up appropriately. For the most part, perception is half the battle. A ski may appear slightly taller than the last ski they had, but the weight is the crucial factor.

Lets move on to adults...

There are many more factors that come into play when sizing for adults.

Where do you ski and on what type of terrain?

All skis are not the same. You will enjoy your skis more if you pick a ski that is specific to the terrain you ski the most. Which of these sounds most like you?

* All Mountain Skis - The mountain is your playground. From corduroy to chutes, from backcountry to bumps, nothing is left untouched.

* Park and Pipe Skis - Nothing like a 50 foot kicker to get the heart going. The rest of the mountain looks fun, but you spend your time working on your skills in the park.

* Powder Skis - The white room. You spend your time seeking the deepest, freshest, fluffiest pow lines. waking up at 3am to catch first tracks and chasing the storms is a regular occurrence.

* Carving Skis - nothing like untouched machine groomed corduroy to start your day. No need for the trees and bumps, you spend your time working on the perfect turns day in and day out.

What is your ability level?

Pick a ski that accurately matches your ability level. A beginner skier generally will find it to be a lot of work pressuring an expert ski. On the flip side, an expert skier will overpower a beginner ski.

How many days a year do you ski?

The number of days you put in on the mountain will directly relate to how fast you improve. If you are an intermediate skier who plans to ski 30/40 days a year, you might want to purchase a ski a level up, so you aren't limited by a lesser ski.

So really...how tall should they be?

After asking yourself these questions, and determining where you ski, how often you ski, and what level skier you are, we can make a general statement with the following:

Reasons to size your skis shorter, closer to your chin:

* You are a beginner or intermediate skier
* Your weight is lighter than average for your height
* You like to make short, quick turns

Reasons to size your skis longer, closer to the top of your head:

* You are skiing fast and aggressively
* You weigh more than average for your height
* You plan to do the majority of your skiing off the trail

Twin tip skis are sized a little differently. We tend to suggest going close to head high, because the effective edge of the ski is shorter, due to the turned up tail. Perception is half the battle here. Just because the ski appears tall, does not mean it will feel that way skiing.

Rockered skis follow a similar story. There are many different styles of rockered skis, from minimal tip rocker, to full reverse camber. SIZE YOUR SKIS LONGER! A rockered ski will feel like it skis very short. Do not get the right ski and realize you got the wrong size because you were unsure of length. Generally, if you are getting a rockered ski, it is common to go about +5 to +10cm taller than your preferred downhill ski.

Sugarloaf 2020: A 10-year expansion

Entering the 2010 season, we see a lot of mountains building up additions. Whether it be renovating lodges, building new hotels, adding trails, upgrading lifts, one thing rings clear; The mountains are investing, and making the resorts a much better place to ski.

One mountain that is investing a lot into the expansion of the resort is none other than Sugarloaf. In the picture below we see three phases. Phase one will be open this year.

Phase 1 - Introducing Brackett Basin

In 2010, approximately 270 acres of new, gladed terrain will be built in the area known as Brackett Basin, between Sugarloaf and Burnt Mountain. The area will include tight, eastern tree skiing and wide-open western-style glades. Phase 1 of the Burnt Mountain expansion creates nearly 2,300 vertical feet of sidecountry terrain, and will make Sugarloaf the largest resort in New England in terms of in-bounds, developed acreage. Access to Brackett Basin will be via a crosscut from the top of the King Pine lift. Construction has already begun on this new terrain, and Phase 1 will begin to open during the 2010-2011 ski season.

Phase 2 - A Second Summit

Phase 2 of the Burnt Mountain expansion will add approximately 135 additional acres of gladed, sidecountry terrain, including access to the summit of Burnt Mountain. The Burnt Mountain Snowfields will open, giving skiers and riders two separate, above-treeline snowfield experiences unlike any other terrain in the East.

Phase 3 - Two Peaks, Two Personalites, One Incredible Resort

Phase 3 will open the north face of Burnt Mountain with the addition of approximately 250 acres of sidecountry terrain. With the completion of this final Phase, Sugarloaf's developed, skiable acreage will have doubled in size. Guests will be able to ski two incredible peaks, with two distinctly different personalities - all in the same day.

When all is said and done, the Burnt Mountain expansion will create 655 acres of patrolled sidecountry terrain and a skiing experience unlike anything East of the Rocky Mountains.

It is with great excitement and great pleasure to announce that tomorrow morning, October 23rd, 2010 at 10AM , Ski Haus Burlington will be officially open for business.

We are located at 1 Wheeler Road, Burlington, MA 01803 (at the corner of Middlesex Turnpike in the former Tweeter spot). Literally IN the on ramp to Rt. 128! Still next door to Dunkin Donuts. We'll have a lot of familiar faces, and a few new ones. Some were customers of ours at the old Wilmington store, some employees. All are skiers who will continue to test what we stock (that's our excuse to go skiing) and service what we sell.

For three years we've been looking for the perfect location to replace our Wilmington store. We miss the old store. We miss the barn board, the beams, the easy on and off the highway. We even miss the cold drafty work shop.

We finally found the perfect spot! The barn board is gone, but the wood floors are there. The parking is great, the easy on and off the highway is even easier! We're here tonight putting the finishing touches on the store and getting every bit of product into the store to make your first impression what you would expect of Ski Haus...Great! We're loading it up with the same great selection of everything you could need to get out and get going down the hill for that perfect run, that perfect day, that perfect week of skiing with or without the family.

So much work has gone into this new store in the last month. The entire staff of both locations has been working at 110% night and day to get this store in shape and ready for the winter season.

I have never felt so much of a good energy/buzz in the shop than I can currently feel. The summer was long, and hot, and everyone coming through the door in Salem is more excited for this upcoming season than I can ever recall hearing in years past. Killington got 16" of snow last week, and is planning on opening this weekend. Stowe got 19" and had over 150 people hiking to make turns this week. The word is out. WE WANT TO SKI!!!

This energy from you, the customer, has only fired us up more. Combine that energy with our passion and dedication to the sport, and our excitement of the thrill of opening a second store to further help you get the right gear for your needs, and you get one hell of a good vibe!

Air Shell Technology - Tecnica Ski Boots

Another ski season is upon us, and the store is full of new product. As many of you enter the shop at the beginning of each season, you all notice the changes in ski technology. "Wow, skis are getting wider" , "Rocker technology, what is that?" , "Those look like waterskis!" , "These are much shorter than they used to be", are all phrases we here on a day to day basis. What we don't hear comments on is the change in boot technology.

Ski Boot technology has come a long way since your last pair of boots. Yes a ski boot is still just a hard plastic shell, and various types of liners. Some of these boots have moldable liners, and some of these boots have customizable outer shells. Generally, most of the new innovative technology can be found in the higher end boots for the aggressive skier.

But what about the weekend warriors? What about mom and dad? Why should the expert skiers get all of the technology?

Tecnica has always been on the forefront of boot innovation. This year, they have done it again, by adding a 3rd element to ski boot construction: Air Shell Technology.

The Airshell system positions a bladder in between the shell and the liner, that allows you to personalize the fit of your ski boot, exactly where and when you want it, in a matter of seconds by using the pressure of your fingers.

Think of the old Reebok Pump technology. The Airshell technology allows you to pump air in two regions of the boot, the heel pocket, and the forefoot. By simply pressing a button at the rear of the boot, you can tighten up the heel pocket, or pump up the compression over your forefoot.

Tecnica added this technology to a boot that is geared towards the weekend warrior. Whether you are a recreational skier, or an aspiring expert skier, you can take a medium flex, comfort oriented boot, and really "pump-up" the performance.

Improvement Projects Underway at New Hampshire Ski Areas

N. Woodstock, NH - While most skiers and snowboarders are busy enjoying the warm temperatures, New Hampshire's ski areas have a chance to roll up their sleeves and get to work continuing to improve their resorts for guests. This summer finds many improvements underway across the Granite State ranging from new ski and snowboard terrain to new chairlifts, energy-efficient snowmaking and more.

Cranmore in North Conway is spending approximately $6 million on major improvements to the resort under new ownership by the principals of Jiminy Peak in Massachusetts. The South Peak double chair will be replaced with a Doppelmayr eco-Drive, energy-efficient, fixed-grip quad chairlift. The existing South Peak double chair will be relocated near the Beginner Basin. Terrain in Beginner Basin will be altered to make room for the chair as well as provide additional beginner terrain. The tubing park will be relocated and expanded from seven to ten lanes along with a new Sun Kid surface lift in addition to the existing handle-tow. A year-round Mountain Coaster is being installed that will allow guests to ride up the mountain and then descend at rider-controlled speeds. Other improvements include the installation of 70 new energy-efficient tower guns that will increase the quality and quantity of snowmaking, especially during early season periods. At the base of the area, the Arlberg Lodge is being converted into a state-of-the-art children's center, a new ticketing system will make for smoother transactions for guests, and many other buildings will be upgraded to improve guests' experiences.

At Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch, a new double chairlift is being installed at the recently re-opened Mittersill Backcountry Area in the location of the original double chair at the area. This is part of a multi-year, multi-million dollar improvement program. Other improvements include a 9,000 square foot addition to the base lodge, snowmaking upgrades and new grooming machines.

Over the summer, Attitash in Bartlett is adding a new Mountain Coaster to the resort. The ride carries guests up the mountain over 1,400 feet on twin stainless steel rails. Once at the top, riders descend over 2,800 feet of track through dips, banked turns and straightaways at rider-controlled speeds of up to 25 mph. The Mountain Coaster will be open year-round for guests, which means even non-skiers can enjoy the mountain in winter months.

Pats Peak in Henniker is in the process of spending $500,000 on improvements, bringing the total spent on improvements over the past six years to $5.5 million. The snowmaking system will receive twelve new HKD snowguns and six new energy-efficient fan guns. New snowmaking pipe on the Duster trail will allow for a faster opening to the summit of the mountain. Pats' three terrain parks are getting a new PistenBully 400 Park Snow Groomer. At the summit, ski patrol will have a brand-new building complete with a deck and full concrete basement for storage of safety supplies. The rental shop will be home to 500 new pairs of skis and bindings, 400 new pairs of boots and 100 new snowboards. Other additions include new uniforms for the snowsports school, a new deck for the Alpine Training Center and new carpets in the base lodge.

Loon Mountain in Lincoln is adding 20 acres of new tree skiing over the summer. $1.2 million is being spent on improvements to the snowmaking system, including 428 Low-e HKD tower guns allowing more terrain to be opened earlier in the season. A new Beast Grooming Cat has been added to the fleet of groomers. Other additions include a loading carpet for the Seven Brothers chairlift and a 48% increase in capacity for the North Peak chairlift thanks to 35 additional chairs.

New ski and snowboard terrain is being added to Bretton Woods thanks to an expansion onto Mount Stickney. For this winter skiers and riders will find new gladed terrain for all abilities.

A third Pisten Bully groomer has been added to Crotched Mountain's grooming fleet in Bennington, complementing the two Pisten Bully 400 park cats purchased last year. Work is being completed on glades and terrain improvements, and new features are being added to the terrain park. In the lodge guests will find another 5,000 square feet of rubber flooring, expanded seating and an improved view in the Onset Bar, outside heating for the deck and a newly designed cafeteria. The rental shop is home to a new Montana tuning machine.

A new base lodge is being constructed at McIntyre Ski Area in Manchester, with plans to be open for this season. The new lodge will be larger than the previous one and will offer more amenities, including the Mac Bistro, featuring special coffees, teas, local pastries, sandwiches, soups and more.

Continued improvements to the snowmaking system at King Pine and Purity Spring Resort in East Madison include the addition of 57 energy-efficient tower guns and two new electric compressors, resulting in a 40% increase in pumping capacity. Other improvements include new food service equipment, additional rental shop inventory and upgrades to the lodging facilities.

At Wildcat Mountain across from Mount Washington in Pinkham Notch, improvements to the snowmaking system will continue with integral pipe replacements that will enhance the system's capabilities. New trail mapping will acknowledge two additional trails -- "Leo's Leap" and "Sphynx" -- as well as identifying established tree ski areas that had only been proposed in the past. The base lodge will see improvements including the availability of WiFi for guests.

The snowmaking system at Black Mountain in the Mount Washington Valley town of Jackson will see the addition of new energy-efficient tower guns on several trails and the installation of air reduction kits that will reduce the amount of air required for operation by 50%, resulting in a more eco-friendly system.

The South Peak Learning Center at Mount Sunapee in Newbury will get a third carpet lift to complement the quad chairlift, beginner terrain park and glades.

At Granite Gorge in Keene, this winter skiers and riders can enjoy the new "Lab" terrain park thanks to the addition of lighting and snowmaking to the Sunset Trail. The base lodge is being expanded with a new locker facility. The rental shop is being expanded and will now include "learn-to-ride" snowboard packages.

Guests visiting Ragged Mountain in Danbury this winter will be welcomed by a new bag check area. Once on snow, they'll find expanded snowmaking, additional glades off of Exhibition Trail and a new recreational race course that will be open to all guests Wednesdays through Sundays.

The Balsams Wilderness in the far northern N.H. town of Dixville Notch will be partnering with Golf and Ski Warehouse to operate retail stores at the ski area and resort. This will ensure guests have access to any equipment they may require during their visit.

4-NH College Pass
Waterville Valley and Cranmore Mountain Resort join Mount Washington Resort's Bretton Woods and Cannon Mountain to offer a college pass for the 2010-11 season. The new 4-NH College Pass will offer unlimited skiing and riding on 255 trails, 37 lifts, 1,061 acres and 13 terrain parks, making it the college season pass with the most skiing in New Hampshire.

The pass costs only $289 with no blackout dates.

To qualify for the 4-NH College Pass, students must show a current student ID plus proof of full-time enrollment (12 credits as of fall 2010) with a letter from the registrar's office or with a current college schedule print out.

Keep in mind the temperatures have been cold up north the past couple weeks...very cold in fact...so cold they have been cranking out snow like they have never made snow before. Well, the storm of all storms petered out! That's o.k. though. It has been cold up north and the ski areas have been blowing snow like they have never blown snow before. Conditions are great and the ski areas have picked up snow almost every day this week. They are in great shape for the vacation week and the weather looks good all next week. With temps in the 20's and a little snow forecast almost every day next week, it's going to be great!

If you are heading up this week there are a few things to think about. You need to get your skis waxed. Bring them by and mention you heard it on the Ski Haus blog and we'll wax your skis while you wait. Just make sure your edges aren't rusty or burred up and we'll take care of things right away. If they are a little rusty, we can tune them up for you and make them like new in just a couple days.

Rocker 101

If you were to lie a traditionally cambered ski on a table, it would contact the surface just shy of the tip and the tail, with the center of the ski rising up off the table. For a lot of situations, this makes a lot of sense - it gives you the ability to lean into tight turns, and apply progressive pressure to stop on varying surfaces.

A rockered ski has less or no camber. The raised tip of the ski will get up on top of snow rather than dive in. This makes the ski more maneuverable and easier to initiate turns. It allows the ski to track straighter with less chance of hooking into a turn when you aren't ready for it. Some skis will have rocker in the tail which allows the ski to release out of the turn easier as well. Fully rockered skis are best for soft snow or use in the terrain parks. Skis with rocker or early rise in the tip are more versatile all mountain. The tip being up off the snow makes the ski feel shorter while making quick turns. When you tip it on edge, the entire length of the ski comes in contact with the snow and allows the ski to hold on ice. It's like having a shorter ski when you want it and a longer ski when you need it. Truly the best of both worlds.

This was taken today at Cannon Mountain! 31" is the total for the four day storm that sat off the coast. Cannon got belted this weekend and is 100% open for the first time in a long time. It looks like another storm setting up for this weekend to freshen things up too. GET YOUR SKIS TUNED! There is nothing worse than driving to the mountain to enjoy three feet of fresh snow and having skis that won't glide or turn so you can enjoy it. We only need a couple days to get them done. If your skis are free of rust and excessive burs on the edges, we'll give you a free fast wax while you wait. It'll get them gliding better and help protect your bases from those nasty rocks. For those of you (and me) who happened to be up north this weekend, we were blessed with powder! The snow at Cannon this Sunday was as light as anything I've skied out west! 18-24" covered the mountain opening up every trail as well as Mittersill (officially) for the first time of the year. The groomers flattened out the mountain Saturday night and then the skies opened up with at least 14" on top of corduroy! There were a lot of happy people out there right up until the lifts stopped turning ant 4:00.

This is a great base for every ski area. Skiing hasn't been better this season. With another storm looming in the distance that could bury the ski areas again, it is time to get your skis tuned, boot dialed in, and take inventory of everything needed to enjoy all that powder up in the mountains.

After the Holidays

So you finally made it through the holidays and realized that you bought presents for everyone but yourself. What better time to get something from you to you! Shane McConkey Tribute Ski Available at Ski Haus!

To celebrate Shane’s life, K2 Skis will release a limited edition Shane McConkey Ski built on the Pontoon chassis, in winter 2009. Graphically inspired by Shane’s personality, ability and many contributions to our sport, the ski will be available at participating authorized K2 Dealers and K2Skis.com beginning in October. Approximately 500 Pair of the unique, individually numbered, commemorative skis will be produced. All net proceeds generated by the sales of the Shane McConkey Tribute ski, suggested retail $699, will be donated to Shane’s family.
“Shane was a part of our K2 family” said Jeff Mechura, Global Brand Director for K2 Sports.
“He was the pure embodiment of everything that K2 stands for, and we cherished the time we were able to spend with him. In many ways, Shane has changed the way we all think about life and skiing and we will miss him dearly. This ski is but one way to remember him and pay tribute to a legend of our sport.”

You have to see this ski in person to truly appreciate it. The graphics are great, the ski is amazing in powder, and all the money goes to the McConkey family.

Shane was a member of the K2 Skis Team and was a creative thinker who challenged conventional wisdom in ski design. His Pontoon rockered powder ski, introduced in 2004, was one of the most profound innovations in ski design in decades. His concept was soon after adopted by the snowboard market thus making the sports more fun for millions of enthusiasts.

Ski Haus is a family business that has been family owned and operated since 1965. Our family grew up here and watched other families do the same. We sold a lot of you your first pair of skis.
